CHILDREN EDUCATIONAL ACCESS Sponsor a child

Problem statement

Children are the country’s greatest resource and represent hope for a better future. Profound poverty, competition for scarce resources, disease, conflict, addictions and lack of educational opportunities put these children at extreme risk for illiteracy, illness, hopelessness, abuse and the meager resources accessible is the common definition of the urban poor child living in the Gambia.

Few opportunities exist for the children of greater Banjul areas and surrounding that allow them to learn and grow to their potential. Although the Gambia government has announced free education for all children at Basic cycle school level and Senior school level, the children are still expected to pay tuition fees, buy their own uniforms, Shoes, books, Pencils (without a uniform they cannot attend school), provide their own food and in some cases there are not enough school desks and resources with children having class sizes of over 50 in a class room.

This lack of opportunity results in a perpetuation of the poverty cycle, allowing them to neither contribute to their full capacity to the community nor be able to take advantage of all that their society and the wider world has to offer.

It’s in light to this predicament that the MCO was founded to meet the need of the ever increasing need to meet the needs of these dear ones and give them the opportunity to be live to their full potential and add value to humanity. The challenges have been many and the successes of fulfilling their lives the challenges will reduce.

Thank you for availing your funds and time to become a MCO child sponsor and we welcome you to our extended family of supporters. You are an asset in the life of these children and your generous contribution and prayers are not in vain.

Family Support

Family is one of the most important, if not the most important thing in our Gambian lives. Taking time every day to appreciate your loved ones for all that they do helps us to reconnect as a family. The basic connection between families will always be love, which connects us as parents, siblings, cousins and children.

Widows face additional challenges, including great stress, social isolation, and financial strain. Families may become overwhelmed, and find it difficult to effectively provide for their children and to find social and emotional support for themselves.

MCO Family support aims to:

  • Increase the strength and resilience of families
  • Support parents as they help their children with Education and special needs to achieve their full potentials
  • Help families make critical connections to other families and resources in the community
  • Provides individualized, family-driven support that respects family culture, values, and preferences
  • Improve community capacity to serve families with children who have special needs
  • Provide a stable and loving family network also provides a foundation for widows family members to flourish and fulfil their potentials.

MCO feels that the most important thing in The Gambian setting is the family. There is nothing that is better than going home to the family and eating good food and relaxing together. To us family means putting your arms around each other and being there for each other.
