Clean water and sanitation

Access to clean water and sanitation is vital for the health, well-being, and economic stability of communities in The Gambia. Currently, many rural communities lack access to safe drinking water, relying on sources like open wells that pose significant health risks, including waterborne diseases such as diarrhea.

Challenge

  • Contaminated Water Sources: Over 92% of households in rural areas face E. coli contamination in their drinking water. This poor water quality contributes to high rates of waterborne diseases, including diarrhea, a leading cause of death for children under five.
  • Inadequate Sanitation: Less than a third of Gambian households have proper hand washing facilities, and open defecation remains a practice in some areas, further exacerbating health issues.

Time Burden: The lack of nearby safe water sources often places a heavy burden on women and children who must spend hours collecting water, impacting their ability to pursue education and economic opportunities.

Solution

We are dedicated to addressing this critical need by providing sustainable clean water solutions. Our current project focuses on drilling boreholes in some of the communities, offering a long-term source of safe drinking water for those communities.
